Deck Conversion

Finally, there is a solution!

First, you will require the services of a reputable and qualified contractor. We at Hartstone only make the tile, we do not do construction, we do not install.
Over the last few years, in conjunction with several builders and contractors, a successful general procedure has evolved that will provide a deck conversion to stand the test of time and elements.

If you have one, you know the story. Generally,an unsightly appurtenance to your otherwise lovely home. Very high maintenance, warping boards raising nails and screws, leaves sticking between boards.
Area beneath rendered useless with unsightly ceilings, no lighting or fans due to water cascading through the deck every time it rains or you water your plants.

Hartstone, a hand crafted concrete tile resembling the soft look of ancient pavers but with all the advantages of a concrete surface.Ease of maintenance, no water running through to the ceiling and area below.

A deck you can truly enjoy and proudly entertain on.

Deck Conversion Installation Details

Load factor and deflection must be determined for each application, usually accomplished by employing an engineering software program available at most lumber companies thru your contractor. This will provide a plan for locating and stabilizing support columns, specifying span limits, additional joists, etc. Most decks are level and will therefore require the outer perimeter to be lowered enough to provide a pitch away from the house so that water will travel to the edge.

Replace the decking with 3/4 tongue and grooved plywood.
Apply a rubber roofing membrane with copper flashing where appropriate
Now youre ready for the tile installation with a heavy stone thin set such as Versabond.

Normally, the former wood rails are replaced with ornamental iron or aluminum which enhances the project and greatly reduces maintenance while greatly improving visibility.
If there is lower level, you will want to consider a ceiling with perhaps lights and fans. Please contact us if we can be of further service.
