Hartstone Tile

EXTERIOR INSTALLATION

Conventional mud bed installation over a suitable concrete slab: For the mortar, we recommend a PCL (portland cement with lime). The lime helps with the grab. Since Hartstone is sized for ½” joints, we strongly recommend using ½” spacers. Our product is flat and dimensionally consistent, thereby facilitating easy installation by a qualified stone mason.

We recommend a sanded, flexible grout such as the Hydroment brand. The grout should be applied with a very dense, rubber float, cleaning as you go with clear water and a sponge.

Dry-Lay Installation: Hartstone tiles can be applied in dry-lay applications for a beautiful, unique look. Advantages of dry lay include less expensive installation costs and elimination of potential slab cracks telescoping up through the surface. We recommend a 1/8” joint and that spacers be used. A polymer coated sand is most desirable as a joint filler.

INTERIOR INSTALLATION

Structure must be sound with minimal flexing and sufficient to carry the weight factor. We recommend a 3/8” mortar board mechanically applied to the subfloor. A "Heavy Stone" thin set can be applied using a ½” notched trowel if a conventional mud set is not practical.

We recommend a sanded, flexible grout such as the Hydroment brand. The grout should be applied with a very dense, rubber float, cleaning as you go with clear water and a sponge.
